USING ENGLISH TO OPEN DOORS TO LOVE & EMPOWERMENT
The english as a second language (ESL) courses are an extension of Village of Hope Ministries, starting back in 2009 with only a single teacher, Vuthy. Our english classes are separate from the courses offered by the Youth Development Center. We currently have six english teachers, separating children into classes dependent on their english fluency. Currently, there are 140 students enrolled in the ESL classes. Our courses meets five times a week, Monday through Friday in the evenings. For these ESL classes, there are three semesters per year, each one about three months in length. In total, there are nine months of ESL classes per year.
Village of Hope believes that education is absolutely crucial for individuals, communities, and societies to flourish. We have made education one of our top priorities in reaching our community, and our english courses are a direct reflection of our heart for change. We see teaching english as another opportunity to reach, love, and empower another sect of the population of Toch Village. In Cambodia, knowing english is a very significant skill. It automatically opens many more doors for the youth; specific to attending university, better jobs in the future, and increasing opportunity for international communications and connections.
As for all of our other ministries, our main hope is for the people we serve to accept Jesus Christ. We see this ministry being a program that can be used to make disciples and equip believers to better share the Good News and their own stories.
